Mendhar Protests: Two Killed, 11 Injured:

Poonch: Two persons were killed and 11 others were injured, some of them seriously, when police opened fire on a mob trying to set ablaze a missionary school in Mendhar town of Poonch district today. A 3000-strong mob protesting alleged desecration of a holy book in US took out a procession in Mendhar town, 270 kms from Jammu, and set ablaze the vehicle of a hospital en route, police said.

The protestors then headed towards a missionary school and tried to set it ablaze, which was prevented by the police, they said.In order to disperse the mob, police opened fire resulting in the death of two persons and injuries to 11 others.The deceased has been identified as Shamim and Alam Shah, they said, adding the injured were rushed to hospital where the condition of some of them was stated to be serious. 

Some of the injured were being referred to Jammu for specialised treatment. Thousands of people also held protests in Mandi town in the border district today. Meanwhile, curfew continued in Poonch town for the second consecutive day without any relaxation.Curfew was clamped in the town on the intervening night of September 13 and 14 in view of the tense situation following clashes between protestors and police that left 20 people injured on Monday.

Additional police and para-military forces have been deployed in the sensitive areas of the border town with strict curfew restrictions, they said. Reports from hilly districts of Kishtwar and Doda in Jammu division said the situation was calm.
