Rahul Gandhi says Being Prime Minister not the only Job in the World

Rahul Gandhi says Being Prime Minister not the only Job in the World:

If there was any doubt that Rahul Gandhi sees himself as the PM-in-waiting, it was removed when the Congress general secretary told a group of students at Santiniketan in answer to a question, “Becoming the Prime Minister is not my only priority,” meaning obviously that prime ministership was one among his several priorities.

Replying to a student’s question, “How do you plan to reform the education system if you become the Prime Minister?” Rahul said, “Becoming the Prime Minister is not my only priority. Is this the only post that one needs before bringing change? You can bring about a change, we all can do that.”

Clearly, the Congress general secretary’s visit to Santiniketan went well beyond the mere symbolic renewal of ties or nostalgia that the Nehru-Gandhis have traditionally had for Visva Bharati.

In the event, the young Congress MP also asked questions on knowledge and wisdom and asked students to differentiate between the two. The students weren’t prepared for such questions. Some of them mumbled, while one said knowledge helps in assimilation and application of information. The scene resembled an open-air class — Santiniketan’s USP.

The philosophical lesson soon gave way to trading of charges when a third-year student of anthropology complained against the “apathy of teachers” and rising “corruption” in the university. Rahul tried to stop him, but the student, egged on by his classmates, went on levelling allegations.

Rahul then cut him short. “I understand you have a little wisdom. What’s the use of telling me all this, or writing to me? It’s easy to complain. You will get applause if you start talking about corruption, but not so much if you start thinking about a solution to it. Are you willing to take up some reform work here?”
Then teachers, particularly from the science departments, told Rahul about the lack of infrastructure, specially laboratories, that the young Congress MP took note of.

Later, he spent some time with students of Sangeet Bhavan who urged Rahul to take some steps about the preservation of Indian art and music. Rahul replied candidly, “I don’t know much about music. Send me suggestions. I will take them up.”
